P. Diddy has described his father Melvin Combs as a hustler and a drug dealer in a new interview while promoting his TV network Revolt.
The rapper, who has been enjoying all types of success for two decades now, posted a video of himself talking about his dad who was murdered when Diddy was just three years old.
Puffy, real name Sean Combs, says he was devastated by the loss of his parent because growing up in a tough neighborhood in Harlem, New York he always wished for his father to have stood by him and answer him questions he desperately wanted answered.
Many rappers who come out of tough neighbors such as Brooklyn or Harlem grew up without a father in their lives which in a way made them become more independent yet the feeling of emptiness without having a fatherly-figured guidance was always there.
“My father was a hustler. He was a drug dealer and he was a hustler, so I learned early in life that there’s only two ways out of that dead-end jail. It made me work even harder,” P. Diddy states in the interview. “Sometimes you can’t just answer why things happen, but I definitely think the route that I went on – staying out of the streets and hitting my books and trying to be somebody – I think he played a role in that”
The video then continues as Diddy explains how his father’s legacy will carry on through him seeing that he carries Melvin’s hustler ambition, mentality, his drive, determination and the overall swag.
P. Diddy really has come a long way from where he was back in the early 90s. He’s gone from dozens of name changes, to reality shows, to founding some of the greatest talent – Notorious BIG – and most importantly, he’s now the owner of his own television network.
