NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The Mannings may be the first family of football right now, but soon it may be the Beckhams.
Terron Beckham, the cousin of Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., has been training for the NFL Scouting Combine in hopes of getting drafted by an NFL team.
His road to becoming an NFL hopeful was anything but ordinary. He last played football in high school.
Beckham decided to move before his senior year to help relieve financial stress on his family.
“I want to take as much pressure off them as much as I can, even if it means my own sacrifice,” Beckham told CBS2’s Steve Overmyer.
He eventually started a new life in New York, where he became a trainer and fitness model.
After five years, the 23-year-old is now ready to give the NFL one more shot. And so far, he’s breaking records. His bench press is 42 reps at 225 pounds, which would break the NFL Combine record for a running back of 32. He also can jump what would be a Combine record 45-inch vertical.
Kevin Dunn, CEO of TEST Football Academy in New Jersey, where Beckham has been training said his reaction when he first saw Beckham was: “Who are you? Where did you come from? What planet are you from?”
When asked what type of player an NFL team might get if they draft him, Beckham, who is 5-foot-11, 230 pounds, said:
“They’re going to get a workhorse. They’re going to get Marshawn Lynch and AP transformed into one person.”
