Jay Z just snagged a genuine painting by the late painter Jean Michel Basquiat for a cool $4.5 million. The NY Post shares that the expensive buy is of an orange, white and black acrylic and oil-stick piece that features NY’s Empire State Building under a Basquiat crown.
The estimated price for the painting was between $4 million and $6 million per the Post so Hov can pat himself on the back for getting a deal.
Jay has had a long love for the Brooklyn painter, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. “It ain’t hard to tell, I’m the new Jean Michel/Surrounded by Warhols, my whole team ball/Twin Bugattis outside the Art Basel,” he raps on “Pica##o Baby.” He’s not the only one. J. Cole shouted out the painter (“It’s like Sony signed Basquiat”) on “Rich N—-z” while A$AP Rocky touted, “Painting vivid pictures, call me Basquiat Pica##o” on “Phoenix.”
Earlier this year, Jay bought a Basquiat painting done by none other than Swizz Beatz. According to Complex, the painting was done on the hood of a Mercedes Benz. Jigga purchased the painting for an undisclosed amount.
